WRITING THE FIRST DRAFT

The most important goal of a first (or rough) draft is to get all your ideas on paper and to integrate them with notes from other sources. Correct grammar and spelling are important parts of an essay because they help make it understandable and readable. However, don’t concern yourself with this in your first draft. This practice eliminates a great deal of the stress about writing; you don’t have to think about the “rules” at first and can simply concentrate on conveying your ideas.

Start at the beginning of the rough outline and write. Do your best to explain each of the points. Refer to your notes and include quotations or paraphrases from other sources as needed. Be certain you add citations for each sentence that includes information from another source. Keep on writing until you’ve reached the end of the rough outline. Don’t stop to go back or make changes. If you hit a roadblock — a point when you freeze and don’t know how to proceed — mark the place with an X and move on to another point. You can go back to the trouble spot later. This first draft will be extremely rough; the writing will be choppy and difficult to read. But that’s okay — it’s only the first draft and you are the only one who has to see it. This draft provides you with the raw material for your essay; you can then work on it and refine it until it is a real gem.
